SJ Open Quick Update

Posted by Breton on October 10, 2010

Tom taking the win at the SJ Open, running a blazing 16:12

There will be more to come but a quick update is necessary…

Senior captain Tom Hoban won his first big race of the season in impressive fashion outlasting a very talented Delsea duo to grab the South Jersey Open Division II Championship in the 2nd fastest time ever at Delsea by a Paul VI harrier. His time of 16:12 ranks just behind 2009 graduate Michael Rankin. Hoban waited and waited for the right time, finally making his move with a little over a half mile to go.

Hoban’s performance paced the Eagles to a 2nd place finish against a respectable group of contenders. Other quality performances included the sophomore stud duo of MacFarlane and Verna running 17:11 and 17:25 respectively. Senior Nick Lamberto came right out of the SATs to run as 4th man for a team that continues to improve!

In the JV, Nick Vadino finished 15th in 18:29 while sophomore Dan Marino dispatched his former PR with an impressive 18:37 (a :20 second drop!). Freshman Jake Durante-Koller was 3rd for the 5th place JV squad, lopping 31 seconds off his PR with an amazing 19:13. Another frosh George Balzer continued to step down as well running a 21 second PR for a time of 19:33. Sophomore Mike Pezzano broke 20 minutes for the first time ever running 19:54!

In the Freshmen race, Anthony Rizzo paced the boys with a great 48th place finish in a field of over 150!

All in all, it was another step forward and one that was needed to close out a relatively tough week. We’ll have more later as well as details on the upcoming trip to the Brown Invite in Rhode Island!

Check out the Delsea Times tab to see the assault the Varsity squad put on it.

With so much season left and the Championship season rapidly approaching, we need to start closing the gaps and really trusting your training.

There’s no better place to take some chances than at Delsea.

Quote of the Day: Fear is the strongest driving-force in competition. Not fear of one’s opponent, but of the skill and high standard which he represents; fear, too, of not acquitting oneself well. In the achievement of greater performances, of beating formidable rivals, the athlete defeats fear and conquers himself. - Frank Stampfl, legendary coach

Shore Coaches 2010: Beautiful day, big results

Posted by Breton on October 4, 2010

We had some big performances yesterday and a relatively impressive team showing, one that we can certainly use as a big stepping stone.

Freshmen Race – 12:05PM (out of 186 runners)

Freshman phenom Matt Gentek unfortunately had to miss this one due to a knock he picked up but George Balzer took over in impressive form leading the young PVI harriers to a fantastic showing for a little over two miles. They showed poise and fight out there in one of the biggest fields they’ve run against so far this season. Jake Durante-Koller was flying and probably passed ten or so in the final straightaway!

19. Balzer 12:34 (#15 All-Time in Paul VI Holmdel history on the frosh course)
35. Durante-Koller 13:06
45. Feeney 13:18
75. Rizzo 13:52

JV Race – 1:20PM (out of 221 runners)

Sophomores Mike Boldurian and Dan Marino put in great performances in their first trek over the Holmdel 5,000m course. Marino continues a remarkable season as the work he put in this summer is starting to show. With Mike Pezzano, a little passion and excitement about the sport can go a long way as his times continue to drop. Keep it up, Mike.

24. Boldurian 19:27
27. Marino 19:28
71. Pezzano 20:23 (-:49 Season PR)
72. Patterson 20:25
84. Munns 20:43
164. Madden 22:44

Varsity C Race – 2:00PM (4th out of 28 teams, 189 runners)

The boys got out perfectly but unfortunately lost each other heading into the Bowl, a no-no for any team that is in the hunt to win the race. For many of them, inexperience was the biggest factor but all in all, it was “the pack” as a whole that needs to improve. With that said, as you can see below, there were some impressive performances for some guys who had never run the course before. Captain Tom Hoban led the way with a time that finds its place in the history books. Hoban led heading into the Bowl and fell off the pace coming out of it but he held on for a fantastic time in early October in spite of the exertion he put forth in the tough first mile. Neil MacFarlane and Adam Verna continue to look stronger each time out with both medalling and putting their names on the all-time top sophomore list. Peter Gallagher hit a huge Holmdel PR to round out the scoring. The squad missed the presence of Matt Gentek, who had come down with a muscle strain earlier in the week but it’s only a matter of time before he re-emerges. Another huge performance belonged to Chris Booth who just 18 months ago was running somewhere in the 22s for a flat 5k!

If the gap continues to close between our #5 guy and #2 guy, this team could really start taking off. With the Division Meet on Tuesday, it’s going to have to happen sooner rather than later! Regardless, there is much season left with the Championship season three weeks away and some BIG invitationals in between!

6. Hoban 16:45 (Holmdel PR, -:26, 34th on the All-Time Holmdel History list)
23. MacFarlane 17:34 (#16 in PVI Holmdel History as Sophomore)
34. Verna 17:49 (#22 in PVI Holmdel History as Sophomore)
45. Lamberto 18:18
65. Gallagher 18:37 (Holmdel PR, -:36)
78. Booth 18:50 (Holmdel PR, -:56)
132. Vadino 19:53
