Start of the 2011 Season In the Books

Posted by Breton on September 12, 2011

The Cherokee Challenge may have hit its peak in terms of participants this past weekend as, unfortunately, numerous teams were left without accurate times and several omissions from the results. That didn’t stop our boys from registering some great results in their first race of the season. For Paul VI XC, it was a workman-like performance, one that sets us off on the right foot but we all know that there should be even better results to come.

We do not have proper places for the boys as most, if not all, were affected in some way, shape, or form. For example, George Balzer did NOT finish above 13 minutes for his race. In fact, I had him at 11:10. Numerous teams were reporting similar problems! Regardless, the boys took this meet for what it was supposed to be – a decent starting point and a good idea of the depth that they are building as a squad. Particularly impressive was the performance of Michael Patterson as well as the whole sophomore class. It will be interesting to see where these guys end up by season’s end.

Take a look at the tremendous improvement from last year to this year:

Freshman: Rottler-Gurley 12:29, Schmidt 12:49, P. Munns 14:14, Packi 16:02

Sophomores: Balzer 11:10 (-1:30), Durante-Koller 11:36 (-1:04), Cleary 11:42 (-1:20), Rizzo 12:10 (-1:21), Feeney 12:44

Juniors: MacFarlane 10:23 (-:07), Verna 10:56, Patterson 11:05 (-1:02), Marino 11:44 (-:06), A. Munns 12:48 (-:15), Boldurian 12:56

Seniors: Gallagher 11:22, Booth 11:34 Lang 13:02

There’s a quick turnaround from Cherokee to the first batch meet (tomorrow) and Briarwood Invitational at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia (this weekend).

NOTES:

And so begins the 2011 season. Huge efforts put in this season from all of you guys. Now let’s have fun putting it all to work. The Challenge is meant to be a re-introduction to racing for you guys. Take chances, manage the nerves, and start setting up your pre-race routine (music, meal, etc).

Start hydrating several days before your race. NOT the night before or day of.

Eat a light breakfast. Substantial, but light. Stay away from dairy, greasy foods, and acidic beverages before races. Idea of a good breakfast? Toasted bagel with peanut butter. Banana, power bar, and some oatmeal. Bad idea for breakfast? Bacon, egg, and cheese with a big glass of milk. You guys get the picture!

Come OVERPREPARED. Pack EVERYTHING the night before. It will be chilly in the morning and raining on and off throughout the day. Bring your warm-up, hoodie, dry socks, shorts, and a shirt. REMEMBER your spikes and uniform.

Remember we are a team – you come wearing your warm-up not a collection of whatever clothing you felt like putting on! Freshmen, if you don’t have a warm-up yet, wear anything you have that is Paul VI issued or store bought.
